About the book...

The Ice Cream Theory
by Steff Deschenes

isbn 978-1439230053
Pub. date 7/14/09
Description: With its upbeat, conversational tone and broad appeal, The Ice Cream Theory is not a typical self-help book. The book strives to use that all-comfortable, all-inclusive, all-relatable dessert, ice cream, as the non-threatening medium to share insight to life when it comes to friendships, hardships and overcoming obstacles.
The Ice Cream Theory is Steff Deschenes’s charming exploration of the parallels between human personalities and ice-cream flavors, a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the variety inherent in a well-lived life. This book utilizes humor and satire to encourage the reader to enjoy life, the people around it, and that nothing is by accident—everything happens for a reason.

The Ice Cream Theory by Steff Deschenes

The Ice Cream TheoryThe Ice Cream Theory by Steff Deschenes

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Ice Cream Theory is not only about ice cream! It's also filled with anecdotes about life, love, friendship, family, dating & well...I could go on! If you're looking for something not only interesting, but entertaining to read, look no further!

Though I typically do not read these types of genres of books I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Not only is it about ice cream & let's face it....who doesn't love ice cream!? I found that not only could I relate to most of the stories in between each ice cream theory, but they were very entertaining as well!

The author Steff Deschenes did a great job explaining each of her theories relating people to ice cream & also telling her stories of life & how she came about coming up with each theory.

This book is a nice, light read that is perfect to curl up on the couch with while being entertained & even laughing along the way! You don't have to be an ice cream lover to enjoy this book!

I'm am helping spread the word about the Huge Gomez Birthday Event! If you want a chance to win some cool stuff (& who doesn't!?) then keep on reading below to find out all the details on how & where to enter!

“It's the age-old tale:
     Boy meets girl.
     Boy stalks girl.
     Girl already has a stalker.
     Boy becomes her stalker-stalker.”

It's hard to believe, but it's been a year since I handed in the final proofs for my weird little book ‘No Hope for Gomez!’ To celebrate this, and the fact that it just became a finalist in 2010's Best Book Awards, I decided to throw an international party. As I’ve had a debilitating fear of throwing parties and no-one showing up since early childhood, I’d be more than delighted if you’d come!

Of course, with every cool, international party comes a gift bag. Here's just some of the stuff attendants will get:

  • ‘Unspent Time’ exclusive short story collection
  • No Hope for Gomez: The Lost Chapters
  • Making of Gomez: behind the scenes eBook
  • Signed hi-res poster + bookplate

(These are all exclusive items and will not be available again.)

Additionally, several lucky attendants will win a Kindle or an iPod!

Oh yeah, you can bring as many friends as you like, just don't bring your crazy uncle who drinks too much and then tries to get me to go to the attic with him to see something wonderful. I've fallen for that before and I don't mind telling you, I came away very disappointed!

Find out how to attend HERE.

Sofie Metropolis by Tori Carrington

Sofie Metropolis (Sofie Metropolis, #1)Sofie Metropolis by Tori Carrington

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Here's another fun P.I. series to keep you entertained! Sofie Metropolis is on the case! Working at her mostly retired uncle's Private Investigator office along with the quirky, gum popping office manager. Of course what's an entertaining P.I. series without the mysterious hunk!? Don't fear...the mysterious & hunky Jake Porter will steam things up!

The book takes place in Astoria, Queens. Where if you haven't guessed it already Sofie & her Greek family live & work. Of course you can't forget Sofie's over-bearing, but loving mother. Throw all that together along with a missing dog, possible vampires & cheating spouses & you have one romping, wild ride!

The Metropolis series is comparable to Evanovich, Plum series. When I picked the book up I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it very much or not. After having read it I can say that I very much did! What makes it stand out is the Greek heritage & references. The book has been compared to the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding & of course the Plum series. I can see the comparisons of both in this book. A light, entertaining, fun read that I would recommend for Evanovich & Lutz fans, along with any fans of comparable authors.

A Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi

A Circle of SoulsA Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This psychological thriller takes place in the small sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut. Newbury has been shocked with the murder of a little girl. The towns detective stumped by the murder, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, who is an expert in cases involving children.

Throw in Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury's hospital along with Naya Hastings's, a 7 yr old having problems with nightmares & sleepwalking you're in for a suspenseful read! Naya dreaming about murder, starts drawing pictures illustrating her dreams. Leia having no leads to go on, is made privy to Naya's drawings & decides to follow their clues, although against her better judgment.

If you're looking for a page-turning psychological thriller then I suggest picking up a copy of Preetham Grandhi's debut novel, A Circle of Souls. A definite page turner, you'll find yourself saying, "just one more page", "O.K. I'll put it down as soon as I finish this chapter".

The characters were great & the plot unique. Grandhi's writing will most certainly keep you hung in suspense! I do hope & believe we will definitely be seeing more of Preetham Grandhi's writing in the future!

Kaleidoscope by Darryl Wimberley

KaleidoscopeKaleidoscope by Darryl Wimberley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An addiction to Speakeasy's & Gambling lands Jack Romaine in hot water! In more trouble than he can get out of, Jack ends up being recruited by a Cincinnati gangster to retrieve said gangsters stolen money & railroad bonds. Jack is not the only one after the loot though! This wild adventure ends up leading him to Kaleidoscope, FL, a town for the freaks to live during off season of the carnival. In Kaleidoscope Jack is the odd man out. It being a town full of dwarfs, Siamese twins, sword-swallowers & many other types of odd people. Can he convince all of them that he is genuine while trying to hide his true meaning of being there?

I loved this book! It's full of twists & turns, ups & downs, humor, discovery & more! I was laughing one minute while in the next it would be tugging at my heartstrings. Kaleidoscope was an entertaining, rather quick read while at the same time will make you stop & think while taking a look around at the end. I would highly recommend this one to anyone who likes circus/carnival type reads or even to someone looking for something with a little adventure.

The Spellmans Strike Again!

The Spellmans Strike Again (The Spellmans, #4)The Spellmans Strike Again by Lisa Lutz

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As the title so accurately states...The Spellmans Strike Again! The fourth book in Lutz's Spellman Series is sure to please! When the book opens Izzy has finally agreed to take over Spellman Investigations. Her first priority of business is to take down rival ex-copm now P.I. Harkey. Izzy is also faced with a million clients missing persons case in which she hires her good friend Len to help out. Len takes to the job & seems to enjoy it a bit too much! Meanwhile Izzy is also being blackmailed by her mother (per photographic evidence of prom night 1994) & is forced to go out with promising lawyers. While her soon to be ex-boyfriend Conner is not happy about the blackmailed arrangement.

Throw in on top of all that, missing doorknobs, light fixtures & other hardware mysteriously disappearing from the Spellman home, Henry seeming to want to possibly rekindle his & Izzy's relationship, little sister Rae taking on an internship to help out with pro bono cases to free the innocently accused...Well, let's just say you're in for a good time! Like the other Spellman books you'll be laughing out loud! Entertaining, Funny this series quickly became one of my favorites!

Sixteen Is Sizzling!

Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum, #16)Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another good one from the Plum Series! Fans will not be disappointed with this Sizzling Sixteen! Uncle Pip has gone to the great beyond & left Stephanie a "lucky" bottle. Uncle Pip failed to mention however, if the bottle brought good luck or bad! Vinne has gotten himself & the bonds company into a bit of hot water & at the same time has disappeared. Will the bonds office have to close for good? Will Stephanie, Connie & Lula find him in time? You'll have to read the book to find out! Full of laughs, twists & turns I highly recommend this latest addition to the Plum Series!

Boonville by Robert Mailer Anderson (Review)

Boonville: A NovelBoonville: A Novel by Robert Mailer Anderson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Travel to Boonville with John Gibson & meet all the quirky characters who call the small California town home. John inherits his eccentric Grandmother Sarah's home after her passing away. Looking for a change he decides to move to this town that's known for having it's own odd language. If you're looking for something a little different, something not so mainstream, then I highly suggest giving Boonville a chance! Filled with quirky, eccentric characters, a memorable plot filled with twists & turns, it will surely keep you entertained & laughing along the way. Though I will say it does have some adult behavior in it, so I would not recommend it for anyone underage or those easily offended. That being said Boonville was an entertaining read filled with humor, love, life & choices.

Houdini Pie Houdini Pie by Paul Michel

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a review stating my honest opinion of this book! Houdini Pie was a rollicking good read! Here's a quick little excerpt about this quick little read...
Ran into Gretchen in the hallway. My head was buzzing with thoughts, but when I looked into those hazel eyes, everything went quiet. It was like a power outage in my brain. All synaptic activity slowed and my inner voice went dead. In fact, I wasn’t even entirely sure I was still there.

I could remember talking to people. Knowing the kinds of things one said in polite conversation. I could remember making people think and laugh. But, at that very moment, I couldn't put my finger on any of the words one might use when running into a fellow human being in a hallway.

Gretchen smiled and said, “Hi!”
Which was one of the words one might use.
    “How are you doing today?”
Which, I now recalled, was a bunch of others.

Poor Dateless, Hopeless Gomez

According to Graham Parke’s book titles poor Gomez doesn’t stand a chance!  He’s apparently both Dateless & Hopeless!  Not good combinations!

Graham Parke is author of both No Hope for Gomez & No Date for Gomez.  I received a limited edition signed copy of No Date from the author in exchange for an honest review.  This post is my review of said book!  Don’t worry, just keep reading!  I’m getting to it!  I am VERY EXCITED to announce I also received an extra Limited Edition Signed copy to giveaway here on my blog!  WooHoo for you guys!!!
blackgomez_giveaway
No Date for Gomez is a short 65 page Novella.  Warning from author: If you breath in too hard, you WILL swallow it!  Here’s a little blurb about the book (copied from authors site)…The events in this novella take place 5 years prior to those described in the international bestseller (fingers crossed): No Hope for Gomez!

“I’ve always worried that we have one particular hair on our heads which, upon removal, causes all other hair to fall out. A Master Hair of sorts.
It’s probably nonsense. It’s highly unlikely. Nevertheless, I comb very carefully.”
-- Gomez Porter, Blogspot.
[5 years and 2 days ago from blogfox]

Gomez’ attempts to secure a date with the new girl in his building are nothing if not unorthodox and alarmingly awkward. But, as fortune would have it, this is not your typical girl next door. This strange creature hides a dark secret, one in which Gomez may well find himself caught up.

Now finally my review of No Date for Gomez!  This is not your run of the mill author and or book!  The book may be short, but it’s not lacking entertainment!  The book takes you through Gomez’s past with females, up to current day where Gomez finds interest in a certain female living in his building.  I found that poor Gomez doesn’t have any hope!  So, the title of Graham’s other book No Hope for Gomez must be true!  I often wanted to reach in the book & smack Gomez upside the head!  At the same time you can’t help but love him!  Will he finally get a date!?  You’ll have to read the book to find out!  Overall I loved this short little novella!  The characters were likeable & I found myself constantly laughing!  The wit & humor in it was excellent!  I must say if you’re looking for a quick (literally), entertaining read that will make you laugh out loud then you must read No Date for Gomez!  I can honestly say…I can’t wait to read No Hope for Gomez!

As I said above…the author was nice enough to send me an extra Limited Edition Signed Copy to giveaway here on my blog!  I will be posting the giveaway soon!  So, be sure to keep your eyes peeled!  In the meantime if you just can’t wait you can jump on over to Graham Parke’s Forum & enter the giveaway for the same book there!

Any Hope For Gomez?

Is there any hope for Gomez!?  According to the title of Graham Parke's book No Hope For Gomez, apparently not!  If you read my last post (which you better have) you will know Gomez is on my Wish List!  Parke's is an author I recently discovered on Goodreads.  The book title quickly caught my eye & has been on my Wish List ever since!  It's getting great reviews & sounds like an uproarious read!  It's probably safe to say he's not, by all means, your run of the mill author!  Here's a blurb about No Hope For Gomez which you can also read on Parke's website!

It's the age-old tale:

   Boy meets girl.
   Boy stalks girl.
   Girl already has a stalker.
   Boy becomes her stalker-stalker.

We've seen it all before, many times, but this time it's different. If only slightly.

When Gomez Porter becomes a test subject in an experimental drug trial, he is asked to keep track of any strange experiences through a blog. What Gomez isn't ready for, is so many of his experiences suddenly seeming strange; the antiques dealer trying to buy his old tax papers, the phone-sex salesman who hounds him day and night, the super sexy research assistant who falls for him but is unable to express herself in terms outside the realm of science.

But when one of the trial participants turns up dead and another goes missing, Gomez begins to fear for his life. No longer sure who he can trust and which of his experiences are real and which merely drug induced delusions, he decides it's time to go underground and work out a devious plan.

Now, years later, his blogs have been recovered from a defunct server. For the first time we can find out firsthand what happened to Gomez as he takes us on a wild ride of discovery.

Oh yeah, and there's also a nurse with big boobs!

Oh, & did I mention he's doing a giveaway for a copy of this book on his website!?  I've entered & am crossing my fingers & toes to win a copy!  Have you!?

My Never Ending Wish List

Just like my TBR list my wish list seems never ending!  I am constantly adding new books that I wish I had!  The bad part is…I don’t seem to choose books by the most popular authors, nor the newest/newer released books.  The books (though not all) that seem to attract me most are older books & what I refer to as “forgotten authors”.  Forgotten authors to me can be defined as authors of only a few, couple or even one published book.  Though they could have been popular at one time they unfortunately are not so today.  Don’t get me wrong!  There still are some popular authors & new releases that catch my eye & make it on my wish list.  Here are a few books that I Wish I May, I Wish I Might, Have This Book Off My Wish List Tonight…

No Hope For Gomez by Graham Parke Venetia Kelly’s Traveling Show by Frank Delaney Just Kids by Patti Smith The Spellmans Strike Again by Lisa Lutz
The Marrowbone Company by M. Glenn Taylor Itchy Donner by Doug Lambeth The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews The Last River Child by Lori Ann Bloomfield

My Greatly Deprived TBR Shelf

I've been feeling so guilty about my very greatly deprived TBR shelf.  If you check out my blog fairly regularly you will have noticed I've been reading Gus the Great by Thomas W. Duncan for...Well, for what seems like forever now!  Therefor depriving all the books screaming to me wanting to be read!

I don't want to give the wrong impression of Gus the Great.  It has been a good read so far.  Part of the problem I know, is I can't seem to stay awake long enough to read more than a few pages at a time!  I typically do my reading at night (in case you didn't figure that out).  Aside from that, the book has been kind of a slow read for me.  Most books I fly through.  This is not one of them.  I'm not sure why that is, as most books that I seem to drag through are ones I don't really care for.  Like I said before...This one I am enjoying.

Until the day in the far distant future (O.k. well, maybe not...O.k. hopefully not far too distant) here are the poor, deprived, neglected books just sitting there, waiting TO BE READ!

This is just naming a few & not mentioning the ones I'm awaiting to arrive in the mail!
